Reuse of Datasets

Researchers should evaluate whether an existing visual dataset can be reused for a new project instead of creating new visual materials from scratch. Reusing data can save time and resources, but it requires an early assessment to determine if the dataset is suitable for the intended study.

Before deciding to reuse a dataset, several questions should be addressed:

  • Is the data openly accessible or are there access restrictions?
  • What licensing conditions govern reuse, modification, or redistribution?
  • Do the original consent conditions permit a new use of the visual materials?
  • Are individuals or sensitive contexts identifiable in the dataset?
  • Is there sufficient contextual documentation to understand how and why the visuals were originally produced?

Public availability alone is not enough. Researchers must verify whether the dataset can be reused legally, ethically, and methodologically, and whether it aligns with the goals of the new project. These considerations should be incorporated into the research design and Data Management Plan (DMP), indicating which datasets are suitable for reuse and under what conditions or restrictions.
