Reuse of Datasets
Reusing visual datasets means working directly with existing materials by selecting, coding, comparing, annotating, or integrating them with other data. At this point, researchers need to make sure that the way they analyze these visuals remains legally, ethically, and methodologically appropriate.
Several aspects should be checked throughout the analytical process:
- Are the reused visuals being handled in line with the original access and licensing conditions?
- Does the analysis keep enough information about how the visuals were originally produced and documented?
- Do the images contain identifiable individuals, sensitive situations, or contextual details that require additional caution?
- Does combining or reinterpreting the visuals create new ethical issues that were not relevant in the original study?
- Is it clearly documented how reused visuals are selected, transformed, or integrated into the new analysis?
Visual data meaning remains closely linked to the original research context, the consent conditions, and the accompanying documentation. For this reason, responsible analytical reuse depends on continuously checking not only what the visuals show, but also how they are being reinterpreted, modified, and combined within the new study.
